Error while initializing eth0

Hi,
I have redhat Linux 7.3 installed in my system and the kernel version is 2.4.18-3. I needed vanilla kernel for my project.

Hence i downloaded the vanilla kernel version 2.4.18 and performed the following steps,

1. copy de kernel source to /usr/src directory
2. make config
3. make dep
4. make clean
5. make bzImage
6. copied the compressed image from /arch/i386/boot/bzImage to /boot/vmlinuz<version>
7. make modules
8. make modules_install
9. copied System.map to /boot/System.map<version>
10. modify the grub.conf file

Then i rebooted using the newly created kernel image. Henceforth, i am getting the following error,

Initializing eth0: 8139too device eth0 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization. ...
<FAILED>

Its a server machine. So, i am not able to connect to it from other machines.

Can anyone help me in this regard.

Thanks for your mail. I have included the support for ethernet card while doing make config.

What else could be the source of this error?
