Error while initializing the sound driver

this is the message that taunts me:

Sound server informational message
error while initializing the sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (no such device)
the sound server will continue using the null output device

what does this mean? I am trying to develope some sort of strategy as to how to solve this issue but I am farely new to linux and don't know where to begin. It is a SoundBlaster Live MP3+ card on a PIII, asus mb, and Redhat 7.3. Could anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks-Tom

According to the error message, you need to create the device file /dev/dsp (a special file that interfaces with your sound card) for your sound card to work...

Unfortunately I have no idea how to do that... You may have to research on your own (www.linuxdoc.org). Read the man page for mknod. I've checked my system, and it seems like it's a character device with the major number 14 and minor number 3. This may be different for your system.

Have a look at /dev/README.MAKEDEV and "man MAKEDEV" for instructions on how to create the sound devices. You might also need to check that the correct module is loaded.
