downloading video clips from Panasonic digicam over USB connection

Hello,

I am trying to download video clips from a Panasonic DMC-LZ5 digicam over the USB interface. I do not have a memory card reader in my computer. For pictures the PictBridge interface with KDE pops up a window immediately and I have been able to copy pictures fine. However this interface doesn't seem to support video ( 30 fps VGA ).

Is there a way to access the contents of the memory card over the USB interface without using the PictBrige protocol which works fine for pictures but does not seem to support video ? Again I don't have a card reader. Thank you for your help.

Well, I usually use gphoto2 to retrieve pictures and video from digital cameras, it works fine for both of these.

gphoto2 doesn't recognize video file

I tried gphoto2 but it didn't recognize the one video file, only the nine jpeg images I had on the memory card. The documentation for gphoto2 also doesn't mention video or movie clips anywhere except the following question from the gphoto2 FAQ

3.1.2 Is my webcam supported by libgphoto2 ? How can I use it ?

libgphoto2 is not meant in any way to use webcams. It only works with still image cameras, and is designed to fetch images out of the internal storage of these cameras. It also eventually can be used to remote control the camera to take pictures, it the camera has support for it and if the driver can do it. But not at all libgphoto2 has been designed to be tool to operate webcams nor do we support these devices. There are other solutions for that. Try searching Google.

[andrew@localhost local]$ gphoto2 --auto-detect

Panasonic DMC-FZ20 usb:

One possible issue is that my camera is a DMC-LZ5.

[andrew@localhost local]$ gphoto2 --list-files
There is no file in folder '/'.
There is no file in folder '/store_00010001'.
There is no file in folder '/store_00010001/DCIM'.
There are 9 files in folder '/store_00010001/DCIM/101_PANA'.

File number 10 is a 1m13s video clip that I can play on the camera LCD. It is not found at all.

That's strange because I've recorded videos on my digital cameras as .avi and gphoto2 is able to download them. It cannot stream video from the camera tho.

Well, you might have to store the file to a compact flash card, I believe most cameras use SD cards, and use a card reader to get them off.
