Diagnosing session shutdown problems

Im having problems everytime I end an XGL session. Either the screen goas black and the machine hangs, or it gets as far as the login manager, but the screen is black and the username/password textboxes are visible but nothing else. Again , the machine fails to respond.

How can I diagnose the problem and work out a solution? Is the end session process logged anywhere so I can see what is going wrong? I get no such problems with a normal kde session, only XGL

Thanks

I'd start by looking in syslog (/var/log/messages) and /var/log/X* logs for clues.

Actually the last two logs can be compressed with 'egrep -e "\((EE|WW)" /var/log/yourlogfile | sort | uniq' to:
Code:
(EE) AIGLX error: dlsym for __driCreateNewScreen_20050727 failed (/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so: undefined symbol: __driCreateNewScreen_20050727)
(EE) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering
(EE) Error loading keymap /var/lib/xkb/server-0.xkm
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/wacom
(WW) fglrx(0): board is an unknown third party board, chipset is supported
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "ModelName" is not used
(WW) fglrx(0): Option "VendorName" is not used
(WW) fglrx(0): Video Overlay not supported on AVIVO based graphics cards. For XVideo support please upgrade to Xorg 6.9 or later and use Option "TexturedVideo".
Hmm. Doesn't hold any clue. Maybe check other XGL threads too in the meanwhile.

While you try to fix that, instead of doing a hard reboot, you should be able to use the SysRq Key combos to shutdown with less stress on the system. When this happens, press Alt+SysRq+S, wait until the hard drive "busy" light stops flashing, press Alt+SysRq+U, wait about 10 seconds, then press Alt+SysRq+B, and your system should reboot without an fsck.
