Deleted the files, but the partition size remains

Quick question

I had a 27GB file on my /home directory, I delete the file (simply by rm filename .. not thur X) ..

but the partition still shows as using those 27GB, I checked the trash bin, but it's not there .. is there a way to force linux to re-sync so it sees the new space .. I know a reboot woudl probably do it, but I just can't reboot that server right now

I did try "df --sync" .. but that had no effect
