Recover deleted files from a Win partition in Linux?

Hey all:

Just curious, is there a way to recover files on a Windows machine that have been deleted with Linux?
The folder was wiped on the Win box yesterday, and there are no tools to undelete. Is it possible to map it as an SMB share, and recover it from a Linux box? If so, how? TIA!

Usually, individually deleted files are given a ? prefix replacing the first letter, which makes it possible to find and recover them..

You can use tools in Windows such as Norton Utilities and DOS undelete..
The usual poblem will be fragmentation of the files. If it's quite bad, (=normal)
then your mileage may vary..

Google threw this up.. have a look in the undelete section..

Well, my question is, none of these tools are availible to me, and Linux being the powerhouse it is, I figured there would be things that I could use to recover these files built into Linux. I planned to map to it via SMB, and use linux to recover the files. OS is Win XP Pro.

Well, you'll straight away have problems if you have an ntfs file system on the drive..
There isn't enough ntfs support in Open Source products yet.. generally only in commercial products. (and trial versions)
ntfs keeps a journal of the files to assist recovery..

But have a look at some of the "rescue" cd distros..

Lists are on the LQ Wiki at http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/..._distributions PHLAK & SystemRescue
or from the other distro list sites at http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/...h_distro_lists
