compiling 32bit gentoo, on AMD64, what CHOST= flag?

Hey guys....
its all in the subject, im compiling gentoo.
the 64Bit gentoo istall cd refuses to boot, so i am installing from a 32bit Knoppix cd.

and becase you cannot chroot into a 64bit environment, from a 32bit kernel, i need to install a 32bit gento OS.

anways, what CHOST should i use ? i686-pc-linux-gnu or x86_64-pc-linux-gnu ???
its technically a AMD64, but i want a 32bit install.... anyone ?
