compile kernel with soundcore...?

i'm trying to install ALSA sound drivers for my laptop which has crystal 4237b chipset and it says soundcore support is necessary (looking for the module that goes by char-major-14). however, i can't load the modules... presumably because they're not compiled. but i can't seem to find any info in the kernel about them.

i'm running slack 8 with the 2.4.17 kernel.

i'm using sorta dated info here, but i think it should still hold. the module you need is the cs4232.o - when you configure the kernel. you need to configure the sound to have the oss and generic sound card support on - the option for the cs4232 should be in there.

in the /etc/modules.conf, the char-major-14 needs to be set for cs4232. that should do it.

yeah, only problem is that if i try and modprobe char-major-14 itself (which should work since we're trying to setup and alias for it) modprobe returns an error saying it can't find the module.

curse dell for putting such a poorly supported soundcard in my laptop!
