Code:
file $(which exif)
/usr/bin/exif: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, for GNU/Linux 3.2.0, BuildID[sha1]=c60893077f8b96067d71ce40c917ea28fe918e44, stripped

Pretty fair bet it's being calculated on the fly, rather than read out of a key-value pair.

You can try groupby

Quote:
groupby is a dedicated tool for grouping filenames by their properties.
If there is a example of two exiftool outputs for 2 similar files, we might be able to see a similarity
For example it's possible the file creation date was modified but Date/Time Original is intact.

Code:
groupby --recursive --include \*jpeg --include \*jpg \
    --shell "exiftool -p '\$DateTimeOriginal' {} | cut -d' ' -f1" DIRECTORY
