My current disk shows up something like this in fdisk:

/dev/hda1 * ntfs Primary
/dev/hda2 extended Pri
/dev/hda5 ext3 Logical
/dev/hda6 ext3 Log
/dev/hda7 swap L
/dev/hda8 reiserfs L
/dev/hda9 reiserfs L
/dev/hda10 fat32 L


(hda1 hda2(hda5 hda6 hda7 hda8 hda9 hda10) )

Is it possible to change the partition numbers to make it sequential via fdisk. Right now 3 & 4 are missing. I want to make it 1 to 8. I don't want to lose any partition or data. Just want to know if it can be done safely via fdisk and what are the possible risks. If there is specific order in which it has to be done, please let me know.

I wouldn't mess with it.
If you had /dev/hda2 and /dev/hda3 as Primary, then had /dev/hda4 as Extended it would have looked neater. But, if it is working, I would definitely leave it alone.

1 2 3 and 4 are reserved for primary partitions. 5 and up are logical. So in your case you have a primary (1) and a primary extendended (2) which contains the logical drives (5 and up). You can't change this really.

You could set up a system with a three primaries and an extended, but it really makes no difference.
