Change icons

I have created several shortcuts on the desktop to executable programs like Yahoo,Realplayer, and Audiogalaxy.I found the Realplayer icon in System icons, but when I changed it all my other executables changed to it too!Can one change the icon on one icon of the same file type without changing all of them?Maybe I'm trying to make Linux do what Windows does.
