backup jobs block error

I have a friend that just became responsible for a sco box and is getting an error message relating to "block error" or "block size error" (not sure which yet) when her backup job tries to run - the backup always fails. She's using a bru utility for the backups. She thinks "maybe" somebody that use to work there might have moved one of the id jumpers on the tape drive. What would be the best way for me to be sure the drive is mounted correctly, the tape she's using is actually formatted, and the device id jumper is set right ? Once all of that is verified, what would the syntax be for a couple of test backup jobs using the backup command, or tar, dd, or bru.......Also, could it be she doesn't have the block size set right in the backup job ? I don't have any real world experience with linux / unix backups (only what I've read and played with) so please pardon if it's difficult to figure out my question here and provide as much syntax as possible in example. She asked me to take a look at it tomorrow for her and I just wanted to ask for a little guidance based on what she's told me so far. Thanks.

Mike
