Backspace key to go back in web browser

Hi. My backspace key isn't working for the purpose of going "back" in my browser (Firefox). What possible reasons could there be for this? Here's the story:

I installed Firefox by compiling it, and all was well. The backspace key worked.

Then, not long afterwards, I decided that since I'm running Debian it might be a good idea to uninstall it, and reinstall it Debian-style via apt-get. Now the backspace key isn't working.

Interestingly, my old installation of Mozilla (which was also installed as a debian package) had the same backspace-not-working issue. Weird, no?

Why could this be? Any ideas? :/
