Getting a ^H on backspace key

I am getting a ^H when the backspace key is pressed. The only time that it happens is on the initial login of a telnet session. Everything is good at the console and my serial Getty's. Any suggestions would be greatly apperciated.

try adding the following to your ~/.profile:
stty erase ^?
