Automatic Log out

Hi,

I have just installed red hat linux 7.2. I log as root. If I don't touch the mouse or keyboard for a period of about 30 minutes, my session logs out. I have tried to find the parameter which controls this, but have had no success. Can anyone help me out, I basically need the session to stay loged in indefinetely.

thanks,

Is this in a shell window or a GUI?

If a shell window and you're running bash or ksh do:
echo $TMOUT
If that is set and has a value other than 0 it is the number of seconds it will timeout after you go idle. TMOUT=1800 would be 1/2 hour.

If you see it set check /etc/bashrc, /etc/profile, $HOME/.profile, $HOME/.bashrc etc... to see if one of them is setting it - if so comment it out of there so next time it won't set it.

You can type "unset TMOUT" or "TMOUT=0" on your already logged in session to stop it from timing out.

P.S. RH 7.2 is fairly ancient - any reason you're not doing something newer?
RH 7.2 -> RH 7.3 - RH 8 (maybe) -> RH 9 ->RHEL/FC 1 ->RHEL/FC 2 -> RHEL/FC 3 ->RHEL/FC 4 ->RHEL/FC 5 ->FC6 (so far)

You are 10 versions back with RH 7.2.
RHEL = RedHat Enteprise Level = Commecially Supported
FC = Fedora Core (beta for what ends up in RHEL - not commercially supported).

Hi,

It's been a while since I used Suse 7.2. But I do believe that /etc/autologout.conf (or alike) is the file to edit/check. Don't remember if there was an associated manpage.

Hope this helps.

[EDIT]Don't mind me.
How in the h... did I get from red hat to Suse.... :-) [/EDIT]

Hi,

When I type the echo $TMOUT, I don't get anything. (I guess the variable is not set). As well, I did not find a file named /etc/autolog*. I have a hard time to believe that there is not a straght foward paramter in the GDM configurator, which specifies autolog time out. If you have any other ideas it would be great.

PS: The only reason that I am using this version of Linux, is because the project that I am working on requires it. The libraries which have been given to me, are compiled under this specific kernel version.

thank you,
