Apps run slowly on ubuntu 8.10

After upgrading to ubuntu 8.10 many of the applications on my laptop have suddenly started doing their stuff very slowly. the big one being xmoto. would rub fine at full screen high graphics, high resolution etc. but now at low res, low graphics, it will have a frame rate less that 1.5 a second.
Any ideas how to speed up my system in general as well as this.
p.s. i've opened up the task manager and cpu ussage will only be at 20-30%, ram 30%, no misbehaving apps.

Ubuntu 8.10 ships with a new version of xorg that some graphics drivers may have trouble with at this time. Plus it has a version of compiz that is of dubious quality (several bug reports out already). Does it make a difference if you disable it?
