Exclamation AMANDA help!!!

Ok... to say I"m a newbie relative to AMANDA would be an understatement. I've managed to get it installed now on 3 computers.. 1 server and 2 clients. I run the amdump program and it appears to run for about a minute, then stops, and then I get this e-mail:

These dumps were to tape /dev/null.
The next tape Amanda expects to use is: a new tape.

FAILURE AND STRANGE DUMP SUMMARY:
intel1 hda5 lev 0 FAILED [Request to intel1 timed out.]

Where intel1 is the client. Then there was a lot of other stuff about time estimates and stuff which was all a bunch of zeroes because it obviously never started. Anyways... to say the man pages for AMANDA are confusing would be a vast understatement and I can't find any good help pages to help me figure this out.. so I thought maybe someone out there could help I newbie in need. Thanks.
