Question Adobe Flash Player 10.1 Firefox 3.6.6 & VL 5.8

Hi,

I cannot seem to get adobe 10.1 to work on my system. 9.0 worked fine until everyone stopped supporting it, any ideas on where to look would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dan

What have you done to try and get it to work?

What were the results of what you have done to try and get it to work?

Are you trying to install Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for your own user or for all users?

Can you not just install Flash from your distro's repositories? Some distros have Flash available in the repos, even if it isn't installed by default.

What is VL 5.8?

Hi AZGJ,

I have installed the plug-in per the direction; extracted the .so file and put it into the /usr/lib/firefox/plugin/ folder (I renamed version 9.0 first).

I tried installing it with my user id, the Vector Linux 5.8 repository is no longer supported and does not contain any updated flash players.

My question is where do I look to see what are pre-requisites to see what I'm missing.

Thanks,
Dan

Adobe's system requirements for Flash 10.1 rather unhelpfully only list some distros and version numbers rather than actual library requirements. The oldest distro listed is Ubuntu 7.10 which was released in October 2007. As far as I can tell Vector Linux 5.8 came out December 2006. It's conceivable that there are library requirements that Vector Linux 5.8 doesn't meet.

Have you made sure that libflashplayer.so has global read and execute permission?

Are you using Firefox 2.0 or newer?

If you put aboutlugins in to Firefox's location field, what do you see?

The output of

Code:
$ ldd libflashplayer.so
might be useful. It will list what shared libraries are required by libflashplayer.so. Whether it will list which ones are required and missing I don't know. If you are missing required libraries updating them will probably be a big task. You update one library and that requires another library to be updated and so on. You also risk breaking applications which depend on the libraries you're updating.

Looks like I'm missing glibc 2.4. I have version 2.3.6 installed will see if I can update without breaking anything. It looks as though multiple versions can be installed though.

Thanks for the pointer Arizona..
