Adjusting the white balance in linux

Hello. I am running Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn release of Linux. When I open up any program or application with a white background, it is so bright that I can hardly make out the words or borders for the application. Like evolution my email app. It is so white that I cannot make out the individual sections of the app when it opens. Even this web site with the white background is difficult to read. I have tried a gamma progam. But for that to do any good, my screen has to be so dark that it looks like night time. I have tried my monitor settings, but that does no good. I think this inquirey belongs here. If it dosen't, then I applogize and will try to find the correct forum next time.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Try adjusting your graphics driver settings. ATi Provide a handy tool to do this for their cards on linux. Not sure about other manufacturers though. Also, post up your monitor and graphics specs so others on here can see them.
