Last I heard it was late summer/early fall. But you can never tell as it is play by ear and of course Linus says its ready for release. Should be close though, they are on 2.4.6 beta 4 now I do believe.

The 2.4.0 kernel went through 12 test kernels, but that doesn't mean anything.

just to be 100% clear on how version numbers work:

even numbers (2.0, 2.2, 2.4...) are stable/production releases
odd numbers (2.1, 2.3, 2.5..) are unstable/development releases

is this correct? so would 2.6 be like....the stable/production release of say....2.5?

And also big significant changes makes the developers sometimes jump numbers, like say if something big totally changed in 2.6.. the next release could be 3.0, or something along the lines like that. Some were speculating that 2.5 was gonna generate to a 3.0, but Linus said that wasn't gonna happen yet...

I really don't give a flip what they call it, as long as I got a even stable number running my machine..

I hear most predictions date the release to late October... ish. Just to give you an idea.
