I usually just change the executable bit on the service I want to stop in /etc/init.d. you could also install something like rcconf and do it that way.

then run rcconf just by typing rcconf. you should get a list of what services are available to turn off.

sorry, I don't understand your last question. could you say it again differently?

but try rcconf first and see if it does what you want. you can also change the executable status of the file directly if that's easier:

# cd /etc/init.d
# chmod -x <filename>

<filename> would be the name of the service you want to turn off. you can see a list of what services are in the directory with the ls command. ls -l will tell you the executable status if file highlighting isn't turned on.

Easiest tool for managing services in Debian is sysv-rc-conf

If you are concerned with the number of service running after an install, do just a base install then aptitude install the programs and services you want. a base install of Debian has ONLY necessary services running. by that I mean even SSHD is not installed and running by default.

I already told you. most of those are necessary background processes for the kernel. If you run top and something is eating up large CPU % then you should investigate it. Otherwise, you don't really need to worry about it. Those processes need to be there.

For future reference, have you searched google for any answers? I'll give you a start:

etc.
