Debian package for editing services?

A bit about my setup.

Hey all, I've been on and off with debian for a few years now, and finally built a custom box. Yay

512 PC3200
XP2800
my old dvd-rw
and an Nvidia GF4mx4000

and I knew enough to get 3d working in 5 mins, so I get 1300fps on glxgears )

Ok so I remember using apt to fetch a package that gave me a text menu for configuring the start-up services, anyone know what it was?

Also, I'm in the process of install a million and one apps, especially 3d stuff like games. Anyone recommend good packages, I understand good is subjective to needs, but you get the drift :P

Regards,

Gavin

Try sysvconfig for editing services.

Thumbs up thanks man

that worked a treat.

I am about to turn off these services, please let me know if I have made a mistake

1) lpd - Printer splooer daemon - I dont have a printer and never want to use one
2) ppp - I think this is for modems, I use ethernet

Does this sound like a good decision?

Yes, you don't need those. And inetd is probably also useless. And if you don't use nfs connections, then you don't need nfs-common, portmap, or umountnfs.sh either. It's also possible that you can live without exim4.

If you disable some service that you actually need, it is easy enough to enable it again. Just don't touch those marked "Don't mess with this". And it might be useful to write down a list of the services that you've disabled, so it's easier to restore them if need be.
