Wink Just contacted Atari

I know I have been seeing on the board about buying from a Linux site will promote Linux. I just spoke with someone from Atari and they said that it has no bearing on it. I was transfered to a person that asked me some questions about it and said thanks for telling me about that you like that. I asked if future games from Atari could have the Linux source. The guy told me that they are seeing what the sales look like. If there is a increase in sales they will know it is because of Linux. So I don't know if anyone else wants to talk to Atari to get them to know that we are serious about games for Linux. Just thought I would share this with you.

So you asked a game company to give away their source code?

Let me know when you hear back from them.

<RANT>..........Well if tux racer is any indication, Commercial games for Linux is not going to pan out very well.......
goto the tuxracer forums.........and read all the posts by the whiners who want the source code for the full version released..........and more than likely a majority of those people are just freeloading cheapskates who never even purchased the full version at all................More people need to start supporting LInux by buying their distro's instead of downloading the ISO.......the same goes for games..........instead of whining for more FREE games, send contributions to the people who make open source games now...........like the creator of Frozen Bubble, or the creator of (neverball, neverputt), or the people who brought you foobillard.
Contributions will encourage these people to continue making games for all of us to enjoy.........
Linux means FREE as in FREEDOM, Not FREE as in No Cost. Being a freeloading cheapskate is not Good, Case in point being .......Redhat, they have abandoned the home user!! and Mandrake is close to being bankrupt.
All because cheapskates would rather download the ISO than purchase the product!!........</END RANT>

Atari is not going to care about linux users if they are going to lose Money, it is simple as that.

Let the Flaming begin..........LOL........

I think what JROCK was trying to convey is that he asked Atari if they would be porting any future titles to Linux. I think JROCK did a good thing. I have sent an email to the developers thanking them for the Linux port and explained that Linux support was the sole decideing factor for buying my first UT title ever. This is a practice that I think the Linux gaming community as a whole should engage in. If anything just keep letting the game gods know we are here.

320 also makes a good point. Let me clarify that I DO NOT think that Linux for free (as in money) should ever go away. God knows that I have downloaded my share of ISO's and will continue to do so. I can't purchase a copy of every distro I want to try. Few here have a bottomless pocket. I personaly choose to try before I buy. This is also a motivating factor for curious newbies. I have, over the past few years, purchased 1 copy of Mandrake, 2 copies of SuSe and 3 copies of Slackware. I will continue to purchase Slackware as new versions come out. Slackware is one that I know I will like. As with Mandrake and others I will grab the ISO and try before I buy.

If you have a favorite Linux distro that you know you love and will continue to use then support them and purchase their product. How many copies of that distro can you purchase before it equals the price of one copy of that alternative OS? AND how many computers can you legaly outfit with that one Linux distro????

I do see and agree with the point that 320 makes about gamers. Support the Linux games you like! A five or ten dollar donation every so often for one or two games is real good deal! And for crying out loud buy the linux ports of mainstream games whenever possible! If you really do support Linux and want to see more and better games come our way then just get the Linux version! Don't come asking how to make your shiny new windows version work!

And if a game like UT2K4 (and hopefully DOOM 3) comes along with Linux support on the same cd then take 30 seconds to do your duty as a true penguin and send them a "thank you" note! Then do your best to support would be Linux gamers by helping them on forums like this one.
