Right, I wanted to know if I could still play these games with Linux using WINE:
- Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 [loopy landscapes as well]
- Zoo Tycoon [original]
- The SIMS deluxe edition
- SIMS Vacation
- The older Pajama Sam games
- Spongebob squarepants: Operation Krabby Patty
- Candyland
- Monopoly & Monopoly Jr.
- Sid Meier: Civil War Collection
- Sid Meier: Alpha Centauri*
- Tiberian Sun
- Celtic Kings: Rage of War
- Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle.
*I've heard of a Linux version, is it bundled with the 'blows version?
[All these played fine with 98SE.]
The last five, and the sims, are the more importants ones, cause they're the ones I bought ;P. No, honestly, these are mostly games I have lying around that my little sister loves playing, and giving them another chance while steering my family clear of MS's bullcrap would be cool.
If they don't work with WINE, I guess I'll just play with them in XP when I get that new PC. [Eventually it'll come :P] Would it be easier to play them in Linux if a copy of 'blows is installed on the same machine?
I might find some others, but they're almost all from 2000-ish, and made for 98/ME. So I guess people would have had longer to port them over via emus? If not, I'll attempt to port them over myself over the summer, and I'll make sure to leave notes as I go along.

Cheers,

Personally, if the games are fairly vintage, which it seems they might be, wine should handle them. I've not fussed with it much. I did install Quicktime for Winblows, and while it installed, and ran, it did not play anything. So my giuess is where wine is concerned, try it, it might work, or it might not.
I know this thread is kind of old, but I just successfully played Sid Meier's Civil War Collection on Linux so I thought I'd see if anyone else needed advice (I am a huge fan of that game). Unfortunately, this is a bit of a PITA if playing the game is your only goal, but it works. The trick is simply to run the game in a Windows XP image for VMWare Player. Normally VMWare doesn't work so well for playing games in, but given the age of this game (and others), VMWare Player handles it quite well.
The PITA part is installing Windows XP in VMWare Player. (Note: I tried Windows 2000 first due to lighter system requirements, but without success. I didn't really persist at it since I already had an XP VM available, so it may be possible.) It isn't particularly difficult to do, it's just time consuming. Of course, once you get it running you can use it for any Windows software you like.
The only catch I ran into was that Windows complained about 2 dll's being "invalid" after installing the game: MSVCIRT.DLL and MSVFW32.DLL. Fortunately, both are readily available at www.dll-files.com.
Anyway, I don't know if anyone is following this thread anymore, but maybe this will help someone somewhere play some old school war games.
I play a couple of games with virtualbox-ose. It's completely open source, and packages should be available for most distributions. That's one reason why I prefer it, the other is the mouse pointer integration, seamless-mode and it feels faster.
