Unhappy what is device mapper?

i already finish make lfs and blfs, after that i found tutorial( tu make live cd but i don't understand about the device mapper:

"This initramfs is designed to find the CD by its label, set up the
device mapper so that the /dev/mapper/lfs-cd device contains the same
bytes as root.ext2 (but with the possibility to write into it), and
mount /dev/mapper/lfs-cd as a root device."

i just next to the next step after finish i boot from the cd and i get the message:
"LFS live cd could not find its device, perhaps due to unsupported or undetected hardware

The problem may be caused by the fact that ISA IDE and SCSI adapter are no longer attempted to be autodetected. if you use such hardware, load the proper driver manually with the "modprobe" command and exit from this shell. for old IDE controller, the correct module name is "ide-generic" or if you want to use the new libata-based driver, "pata legacy". To avoid this message next time you boot this cd, use a kernel command like this: linux load=ide-generic

this problem can be also caused by a slow SCSI controller or USB/firewire CD-ROM that needs more time to be detected. if you see any kernel message below, this is the case. in this case, it is sufficient to type "exit" and the CD will continue the boot process. to avoid this message next time you boot this CD, use a kernel command like this: linux rootdelay=20

Dropping you to a shell
sh:no job control in this shell
sh-3.2#

regards....

The device-mapper in Linux basically creates new block (storage) devices out of other ones; it's used in things like Logical Volume Management and software RAID. See here and here for more about it.

As for your problem, I'm not sure what exactly it is you're doing... can you give us more information? For example, can you give us a link to the tutorial you're using? And what version of LFS & BLFS did you build?

http://www.mail-archive.com/livecd@l.../msg04993.html

i dont understand about device mapper :
This initramfs is designed to find the CD by its label, set up the
device mapper so that the /dev/mapper/lfs-cd device contains the same
bytes as root.ext2 (but with the possibility to write into it), and

Hi..

Yes i use same tutorial how to make lfs live cd....and i've same problem to!! i have tried to compiling kernel again with device mapper and install device-mapper package.
the problem is:
1. there are no /dev/mapper/lfs-cd directory, so i can't mount /dev/mapper/lfs-cd as a root device
2. how to set up the device mapper so that the /dev/mapper/lfs-cd device contains the same
bytes as root.ext2! i think it use 'dmsetup', but i don't know how to use it

actually i've already to skip this step, but my lfs image not like my lfs system when i try in virtual machine..

anybody help...??

regards

ymmij, I unfortunately don't have time at the moment to read through that tutorial to see what might be going wrong for you; hopefully someone else here has more experience following its instructions. In the meantime, though, you may want to look at this thread, particularly the information about the Linux Live scripts.

When you mkisofs, did you use same label as given to initramfs?

From tutorial:
"This will produce the initramfs_data.cpio.gz file that looks for the CD
with the label "lfslivecd-my-unofficial". If you change the
"my-unofficial" string, be sure to also change it in the "mkisofs"
command below."

HTH,

D
