jhalfs fails, error message is incomprehensible

Attempting to run jhalfs. It's failing every time. Versions of it tried: development, most recent stable (april of this year). Versions of the book tried, SVN 8.0 and, despite the admonishment that it is unsupported, 8.1. All fail with the same error.

Very odd, as I had used the april version of jhalfs to start my current system. Contradiction there somewhere.

Nonsense error message from jhalfs. Google actually returns many results when I give the error message as a string, but (a) none of them seem related to LFS and (b) they made no sense to my feeble understanding

Quoting, because code does not wrap:

Of particular interest, the last six or so lines are garbage characters, as if displaying binary as text without a filter.

Can anyone give me a clue?

I don't recognize that. But, I can't run jhalfs from an LFS
build either. I have to use Ubuntu.
