As stoat already said, follow the book. I'll just add to that a bit. Have a clear head when reading the book, because it is very easy to skim a line or two of information that is extremely important, even though it may not be emphasized via bold or italics, etc. A good example is for your source directory and source tarballs. The book says for every package, it is assumed you have unpacked the tarball and entered into the newly created directory before you start following the instructions for building that particular package. If you gloss over that line, either nothing will build, or things will get built wrong and it will get ugly.
I assume this is your first time building LFS. Some errors are immediately apparent, whereas some errors may not be noticeable until much farther down the line. I've had to start over several times, because I did not follow the book. When you have finished LFS and successfully rebooted into your new operating system (this takes about 3 days work for me) only to discover that you have to go back to chapter 6...... You will wish you had paid closer attention to the instructions the book gives. LFS makes things simple, such that you can often just copy & paste. When you start with BLFS, I recommend you read each page carefully before following any of its instructions.
