gcc configure error

I know someone else posted this last October, but there was no response, and hopefully a few more gurus are watching this forum now.

I'm using the LFS book with the 2.6.4 kernel hints, and I am getting an error when I try and configure gcc 3.3.3 (binutils is 2.15.90.0.1):

"cannot determine a size for short"

Does anyone know the solution for this error?

what chapter are you on??
is this the 1st or 2nd pass of Gcc??
can you reproduce the error consistently??
can you post the whole error message??

Gcc isn't the worst of your problems if you're trying to build on the 2.6 kernel headers. E2fsprogs and util-linux need serious wrangling to get past and as they deal the hard drive you're putting your whole system at risk so make sure you've got everything backed up...
