is mpc installed
what is the output of ls -l /usr/lib/libmpc.so.3

Yes it is installed.

Code:
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 15 Feb  1 21:07 usr/lib/libmpc.so.3 -> libmpc.so.3.1.0
I researched on the internet, and people suggest creating a symbolic link to libmpc.s0 . I wasn't sure that was the right thing to do, so haven't done that.

I really dont know why your having these issues,
try running ldconfig
A symlink is not needed

I realised that all this while I was using kernel version 3.16, while the recommended kernel version is 3.2+
Probably that was the cause of the error.
Started afresh on a Fedora VM running Linux kernel version 4.2
