Gawk won't configure correctly

Ok, so I tried running the './configure --prefix=/tools' comman after unpacking gawk(Sect. 5.14). It got to the gcc part, then quit w/ an error, I'll have to try it again to get the error, but if anyone could help that'd be great. Thanks.

here's the output from running './configure --prefix=/tools'

checking whether make sets $(MAKE)... yes
checking for egrep... grep -E
checking for bison... bison -y
checking whether ln -s works... yes
checking for gcc... gcc
checking for C compiler default output file name... configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
See `config.log' for more details.

If you want the config.log, I'll have to get it for you. This is after running the second pass of gcc. I can't even redo gcc because it gives an error about giving cc a valid compiler. Maybe this helps?
