Guarddog and how to configure it correctly

Hi,

I am using Debian Sarge on my machine and it works very well.
As firewall I installed Guarddog and allowed SNMP, POP3 in section mail.
As mail agent I am using Thunderbird.

When I switch on firewall i am not able to send or receive e-mail any more.
When I switch of firewall I can send and receive emails.
I am trying to figure out what is wrong with my firewall configuration but it is obliviously I can not find it myself.
So if any of you use same firewall, please write down what do you think about my firewall problem.

thank you in advance

Regards

You need to configure guarddog to allow email protocols to be served to your computer.

In guarddog there are two predefined zones, "local" and "internet". (you can add as many zones as you like but you don't need to.) a zone is just a collection of IP addresses.

the local zone contains your computer's IP. the internet zone is for all IPs (the whole internet). If you want to allow a network protocol to be served from the internet to your computer, you have to select it in the "protocols" tab. for example, if you want to allow your ISP (who is in the "internet" zone) to serve you with POP3, select the "internet" network zone, go to the "protocols" tab and enable POP3 in the mail section.
while you're there, enable the following protocols since you probably want these too:

DNS
FTP
HTTP
HTTPS
SMTP

unless you're running a server, you probably don't want to mark anything in the "local" zone. after clicking the "apply" button, visit www.grc.com and do a complete shields-up test. all ports should be in "stealth mode" (green).
good luck
