What does this message mean

I have never seen or at least noticed this before.

I ran yum update had some problems so it did not complete but I noticed this in the output:

---> Package kernel.x86_64 0:2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 set to be erased
---> Package kernel-devel.x86_64 0:2.6.18-194.17.4.el5 set to be erased

What does this mean?

Current version is:
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga)
2.6.18-194.11.1.el5

In the /usr/src/kernels directory there are 3 sub directories listed.
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 4096 Aug 13 08:32 2.6.18-194.11.1.el5-x86_64
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 4096 Nov 3 09:59 2.6.18-194.17.4.el5-x86_64
drwxr-xr-x 19 root root 4096 Nov 15 10:49 2.6.18-194.26.1.el5-x86_64

I assume you are also installing a new kernel? It's removing an old version.

Looks like it is going to remove the oldest kernel.

What exactly is the question or concern?

yum check-update output

I just wanted to make sure that this was not doing something bad. I am assuming since I am not using that version of the kernel it is ok just wanted some verification I guess LOL.

Also this was the error message I ran into thus the update did not work. I think it is saying that the version of samba we are running will not support the new version of libtalloc.so.1 (2.0.1-11.el5) being installed via the update.

Current version's installed:

Quote:
rpm -qa | grep libtall
libtalloc-1.2.0-52.el5_5.2
Quote:
rpm -qa | grep samba
samba3x-common-3.3.8-0.52.el5_5.2
samba3x-3.3.8-0.52.el5_5.2
samba3x-winbind-3.3.8-0.52.el5_5.2
samba3x-winbind-3.3.8-0.52.el5_5.2

The dependency may be on the 32-bit versus the 64-bit version of the library. Try those rpm commands in your last post again but this time use
Code:
rpm --queryformat "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE} (%{ARCH})\n" -qa

Did not return anything different. Thanks for the reply.

Quote:
rpm --queryformat "%{NAME}-%{VERSION}-%{RELEASE} (%{ARCH})\n" -qa | grep samba
samba3x-common-3.5.4-0.70.el5 (x86_64)
samba3x-3.5.4-0.70.el5 (x86_64)
samba3x-winbind-3.5.4-0.70.el5 (x86_64)
samba3x-winbind-3.5.4-0.70.el5 (i386)
This is no longer an issue.
