SUSE/RHEL on IBM x346/x336

Anyone have installed SUSE/RHEL on IBM x346/336 ?
Is that stable ?
What is the platform used (x86 or x86_64) ?
Which version (9 or 10 for SUSE, 3 or 4 for RHEL) ?
What is the kernel version used ?
Any special installation procedure/steps ?
Which ServeRAID ?
Any QLOGIC ?
Can you share your experience here ?

I have installed SUSE SLES 8 and 9 on X335s and X336s.

They are both as stable as anything, just using the stock kernel (note, if using IBM's TSM (and specifically connecting to a tape library via fibre) or Oracle you MUST stick to stock kernel at the moment as they lag WAY behind with updates to their software for new kernels)

With Qlogic you will need to get the latest drivers from qlogic.com and for SLES 8 you MUST download the broadcom network driver from the broadcom website (unfortunately it is only available as a tarball source so you have to compile it on the machine.

I have a short piece on installing SLES 8 and 9 on x335 and x336 with SATA at the following address:

Any other questions, just give me a shout

Phil

U mean I have to use Service Pack 1 of SLES 9 ?

I ahve tried to install SLES 9 R 5 (the name of the ISO) and I guess it is SP 5, right ? But it hang up at the last screen.

BTW, I have tried both i386 and x86_64 version and they also have problem at the final screen.
FYI, I am using LSI Logic with SCSI HDD.

No, you need SP2a for SLES 9, SLES 9 RC5 is the fifth release candidate and you will get problems.

One other thing we found that may be causing the problems you are experiencing is that you need to:
1) remove the Qlogic card
2) Install the OS
3) Re-install the Qlogic card

otherwise SUSE gets all confused and thinks you want to install the OS on the SAN drives. I have spoken to several IBM engineers about this and that is there best suggestion as to what to do.

Sorry my mistake, just re-checked my blog and it is SP2, not SP1 (as I first put) or SP2a (as I posted above!)

Have you used SUSE with QLogic and SAN as mentioned above ? Everything works fine ? How long have you run these config ? What is the SAN used ?

Coz I have encounter serious disk corruption problem with RHEL 3 and SAN DS 400 which makes us want to switch to another distro.

BTW, can we legally use SUSE SLES without the support license ?
