Problem using APT in RHEL 5.0

hi
i have installed APT on RHEL 5.0 .when i tried to update apt ,following thing happened
[root@PC1-5 ~]# apt-get update
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/apt/lists/lock - open (2 No such file or directory)
E: Unable to lock the list directory

when i checked on the above mentioned path "/var/lib/apt/lists/lock".this directory structure doesn't exist.
i have also verified that most of the directries have not been created by apt during installation.Remember, installation didn't give any error.
i have already tried it with SUDO.

any body have the solution?

While it may not be a solution I would recommend you use yum. Utilizing yum will allow you to align yourself better with Redhat standard practices.
