Memory usage

Hi,

The Total memory usage on one of the Linux servers is 70%. I have found that the memory usage by each process is very less and sum of all those doesn't come out to be 70% of the total memory.
But when I run a command free to check the memory usage, it gives me about 70% of memory in use.
Any clues why?

Thanks,
AJ

it's being used as disk cache and buffers. it will be freed if programs need it.

What if the memory usage goes to 100% every now and then? I have to setup the threshold for monitoring purpose. What can be the threshold then?

What are you using to read the memory?
At the command line type free and read the line that says "-/+ buffers/cache".
Reading that line will give you the memory usage only, expluding the disk cache.
