Installing Oracle 11i using FIREWIRE as storage; Redhat 9.0

Hi,

I am trying to install Oracle ERP 11i (11.5.8) using MAXTOR FIREWIRE 200GB disk. Software Redhat 9.0. Hardware Compaq 3000, dual processor; 490MHz; 500 MB RAM.

Everything looked like working fine (after setting LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.4.1, system was hanging before). But, there are 2 potential show-stoppers / problems.

1) to install oracle 11i software , there are nearly 18 CDs. System HANGS soon after the 2nd CD completes. It should prompt me for 3 rd CD. It just hangs.

2) so I have to reboot system and do everyhting all over. like cleaning the mess that previous installation created.
Sometimes, in this process , while mounting FIREWIRE disk, system hangs. the command that i give, after loading modules thru modprobe, is
mount -t ext3 /dev/sda1 /mnt/fire

Can somebody help me to understand whole thing? has anybody successful installed or used FIREWIRE disk for any major software? I am just using FIREWIRE disk as storage.

Are there any enviroment variables that should be set in order to work with firewire?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

I take it you mean Oracle 10g or 9i ? I am not aware of the launch of 11.

What I would suggest is that you do your oracle install to local disks, and once that succeeds, then create a new database on the Firewire disk.

Hi,

Have you tried staging all of the 11i cds? (The install instructions on the red CD will tell you how to stage all the cds on your HDD) It might be worth a try instead of sitting there swapping all those cds...

AJ.
