Question Want Gnome & GDM for Kanotix

Since my last thread regarding gdm has disappeared and I can't locate it I have to go ahead and ask this. I have reinstalled kanotix and I want to use gnome and gdm instead of kde and kdm (my preference ). However, after installing gsynaptic I cannot properly install gdm. after setting gdm as the default on the last install (after apt-get dist-upgrade) I could not get x-server to start at all. Can anyone explain how to get gnome with gdm working on kanotix or at least point me where i can find this? Thank you, folks.
