I was happily using RH9 until I heard that it would die (at least from a support standpoint) at the end of April '04, so I bought a copy of SuSE 9 Personal...
I'm using a Maxdata laptop with a Plll 650 intel and 198 mb ram...
Although I like the look and feel of SuSE, I am stumped at how to configure my Netgear MA401RA wireless card. It worked fine in RH9, but it refuses all attempts to configure it in SuSE. My wireless LAN broadcasts on channel 5, so I made the following edit to /etc/sysconfig/network/wlan0-pcmcia: WIRELESS_CHANNEL=5. Otherwise, the WEP key seems to have been set up OK. The link LED on the card is solid on, but no connetivity. Anyone run into the same problem?
I'm also similarly stumped on how to configure the LTWinmodem (again, this worked great in RH9 with some tweaking). It appears that the problem is that no one has developed an RPM package to match the kernel in SuSE, or does anyone know of one?
I have been having trouble as well. First, the winmodem. I use the pro version and there are binaries to be installed. Does not yast2 show packages when searching "modem?" Second, the wifi card. I have a trendnet tew-221pc. It worked in 8.2, but in 9 I show no signal. It could be that because KWiFiManager sees the card as eth0 and yast2 sees it as wlan-pcmcia-0 there is a conflict/mismatch. The suse site lists History, changes made to the different versions, there it talks about SUSE Plugger for handling hardware such as pccards. So that is next thing to check.
When I attempt to configure the modem in Yast2, I get a popup box that identifies that a LTModem package needs to be installed. The most recent RPM packages listed on Linmodems.org do not install due to the fact that they were written for older kernels. I've even attempted forcing the install, all to no avail.
I'd love to fix this and the wifi problem, cause otherwise I very much like SuSE...
In the pro version the binaries are on the disks that came in the suse box. Is the case with the personal version different? I expect you to use yast2 to install the LT driver from disk like a regular program.
