suse 9.1 professional can't startx

hello everyone! i finally got a dual boot system running with windows xp (FAT32) and SuSE 9.1 Professional

everything went fine on the install, i started up, SuSE started and loaded perfectly. I then decided to do an online update of all available packages. the install went fine and then i wanted to switch users, when i clicked my screen turned black and a bunch of white lines were on it...so i restarted

when i restarted, grub loaded fine, i then selected linux to boot from the menu...it went through the entire process without any problems but then when the kernel completely loaded (right when it was about to go to runlevel 5 i believe) the screen turned black

so i rebooted, started in failsafe, then logged in as root and tried startx...but this time it just gave me a black screen with a whole bunch of garbage

i read a post here at linuxquestions.org:
/questions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=213394

problem is, when i start in runlevel 3 (or failsafe), and try run
Code:
init 3
or even
Code:
startx -- -logverbose 5
i just get stuck with the same problem...

i try to run a command with sax but all i get is ~bash: sax: command not found
i also tried xf86cfg but got a bunch of garbage

and finally when i run the YaST repair module all i get in the way of errors is something related to postfix which i just repair...

the last thing i tried was editing etc/X11/XF86Config...i changed my vertical refresh rate to 50-70 from (50-120)..but it still won't boot!

are there any suggestions people can give me??!
thanks a ton!

type 'linux 3' from the grub screen. login as root, type 'sax2'.
