so with the 2.6.4 kernel RPM, all i have to do is install it via RPM, and it will automatically replace the existing 2.4.21 kernel in suse 9.0 personal?

i will still continue to purchase SuSE's boxed product (one reasons i bought 9.0 was to support suse, and i still will do this). but, as for 9.1, i will go for ebay, mainly because there will be a 9.2, then maybe a 9.3, then a 10.0. the only reason i want to upgrade to 9.1 is for the 2.6 kernel. if i can get 2.6 installed via RPM, then im fine and i dont need to upgrade. but when 10.0 comes out, that's a major upgrade, and i will buy that, same with 11.0, and so on. so ill only buy major upgrades because they are "major upgrades". dont get me wrong, im not a cheapskate. i just dont feel like buying every version number that comes out when it comes out.

also, i found some SuSE books. go to linux.org, and under the BOOKSTORE button, go to the right, you'll see "distribution specific" list of books, and there's some suse ones. 9.0 i think too,

oh no, its ok, i dont think i made myself clear, i just had to clarify myself.

i checked again, and there's no suse 9 books, latest is 7 i think (6.2 at least). i bought the "red hat 9 bible" and it's a good learning tool, even with suse 9. its a nice reference to have.

don't know if you grabbed it yet but if you go to this link you can download the 2.6.4 rpm and the 2.6.4 source rpm. Then you can either use Yast or the rpm command and you'll be set.

thanks. i have recieved that link, but just havent downloaded it yet, as im still on dialup.

i have a 2.6.0 kernel source bzip file though, and ive tried to compile that, but ive been unsucessful all 10 times. its always been a soundcard problem, even though ive built in the correct modules. ill try these new RPMs though.

For those wanting a SuSE book - the best and only one I have found to be any good and solely related to SuSE is the Admin Guide which comes with 9.0 Pro. There is nothing else SuSE specific out there although of course much of the content of any good Linux book will be applicable - with care. Mastering Red Hat Linux 9.0 by Michael Jang is very useful. As is Sybex's Linux Complete. I have the second edition and I would say that it is showing its age in terms GUI and Kernel references. For networking and servers though both books are helpful.

SuSE would be well advised to make the Admin and User Guides available seperately.
