ok, novell anounces Suse 9.1, boasting the new 2.6 kernel. but my question is: does the 2.6 kernel come with personal edition?! i bought suse 9 personal, and in the description, it said it included the 2.6 kernel, but after recieving it in the mail, i had found that the description had lied, and the 2.6 kernel is only for professional.
suse 9 boots way too slow (1 minute 30 seconds), and i tried the 2.6 kernel, and i loved it (not all of my hardware worked, so i went back to 2.4).
What description of Suse 9.0 did you read? Every detailed description I read/can find now mentions the fact that the kernel 2.6 "preview" is contained on the suse DVD, and that the "PREVIEW" would not be installed as a base kernel and was only for experienced users who wished to test a suse 2.6 kernel. Since the personal edition doesnt have a dvd, its pretty clear it didnt come with a 2.6 preview kernel.
As for not all your hardware working, that's up to you. If something doesnt work, you didnt configure it right when you compiled...
Since the press release says the system will use a 2.6 kernel... obvoiusly, the personal has to has it too since the system will be built on a 2.6 kernel.
The 2.6 kernel running faster than the 2.4, major hardware issues, I'd say. why I have fellow suse'ers here what is a good suse book? So many are focused on RH - what about suse?
* Easy to install alongside Windows
* Includes a host of powerful, useful, and fun applications
* MS Office compatible office suite
* Quick and easy Internet access
* Extensive collection of multimedia applications
* Protection against viruses
New in SUSE LINUX Personal 9.0:
* Installation alongside Windows on the same computer
* New office suite with optimized compatibility, improved import/export filters, macro recorder
* New version of free image processing program GIMP * Booting two times faster
* New dynamic menus in KDE
* Brand new great games "
as far as i know, all the reviews ive read say that it boots 2 times faster is because of the 2.6 kernel. now without it, its just a normal 1.3 minute booting system.
well, im kinda disappointed in SuSE since i got 9.0 personal and found out it didnt have 2.6, so i havent been to their website since. they distro is nice though, but nicer with 2.6.
im going ebay next time, i thought i'd buy the boxed version to help support suse, but they screwed me over, so from now on its ebay.

Your support helps develop the suse distro with the updated kernel. The 2.6 kernel WILL be available for download from SuSE a short while after it is released.
I was disappointed by the lack of 2.6 also. I find suse 9.0 very slow to boot and run with 2.4.x and pre 3.2 kde. Slow enough that I went for mdk10.
There was some discussion about the 2x faster boot commet when suse 9.0 came out. It is rather deceptive, but not too far of a streatch if you have the dvd.
It is too bad that they did not release newer 2.6.x kernels as the beta process moved along, after all, the dvd just had a 'preview' (alpha?) anyway. I love the suse releases just for the sheer number of apps included.
If you are still looking, I found this link for SuSE 2.6.4 Kernel RPMs.
The first post lists them as 2.6.2, but if yoyu read all 9 pages of posts you'll see that the link takes you to the current version. Read through the thread - there are a couple of other files you'll need.
I'm new in the forum. I wanted to ask if you may plz can help me for my question. I wanted to change the name of the computer, i tryed changing it for /ect/hosts but it didnt change i didnt restart or anything becos i'm afraid it can couse me problems. so i will return the name as it is, and then see what do you think guys.
I am in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and even on Amazon I did not find an adequate SuSE book. Everything was either out of date, or totally dedicated to RH. I even had one person from "the church of RH" try to convert me. But I stuck to my guns, and ran.
I didnt find any book for SuSe even. But most of the things that you do in RedHat is done in SuSe i think......
Although i tryed to change the name of my computer and it didnt change, i mean it show in the shall wierd name.....
yes, i just hope none of them falsely advertise. that might have been an amazon.com error though, not suse. either way, im still going with ebay, because $40 for a new version every time one comes out can get expensive.

What is the "cost" when your favorite distro is pulled because the company can no longer afford or is no longer willing to sell a non-enterprise product? (Like what RedHat did...)
The difference in cost between $40 for an e-bay version and $59 for an official upgrade version (same as the full without the tech support or printed books) is not going to make you or break you. Consider what that amounts to per day for the period of time you use it. If it's only 6 months, $20 comes out to be 11 cents per day (77 cents / week.) That's less than the cost of one sixteen ounce soda per week.
The difference it makes in the end is that you are supporting the manufacturer, not some person who likely contributes little to the Linux Community.
The choice is ultimately yours. I personally believe in supporting the companies that provide something as useful as the SuSE Linux Pro Distro.
