SMP in SuSE 9.1?

I liked suse alot on my test rig over mandrake 10. why im not sure..probably because the FTP installer WORKS unlike mandrake.

The detection and all goes well, im sure the install will...but it only detects 1 CPU, not both.

now i know linux is SMP capeable thats onea the reasons i want to try it as a main OS.

So any way to make suse detect both upon install? they not modded XPs, theyre real MP CPUs. id hope to not do a kernel rebuild or something..ive never done that before.

Thanks in advance guys.

"The detection and all goes well, im sure the install will...but it only detects 1 CPU, not both."

I think that later in the SuSE install process you have a chance to manually override the kernel selection. You want to tell the SuSE installer to install the pre compiled SMP kernel not the pre compiled default kernel.

Another possible way to do it is to go ahead and install the default kernel. Once you get a working SuSE system then you can download the SMP kernel from SuSE and install that. Run dual boot until SMP works OK.

"id hope to not do a kernel rebuild or something..ive never done that before."

The first time that you do a kernel compile it is a big hassle because you have to specify the settings for a lot of system components that you never heard of before. After you do your first successful kernel compile then they become fairly routine.

im trying to think. i know i isntalled SUSE on my other machine but if it asked about a kernel option im not sure. I like the other distros where u either type linux or SMP before the install....I think that works on mandrake. I know i did it both ways and the SMP way even installs faster
