I have Debian 3.0. I am trying to recompile the kernal to enable more thatn two serial ports. My modem is on IRQ5 serial port 5 (ttyS4).
FIrst of all, of the two configured serial ports, (ttyS0 and ttyS1) can I just change one of them to be ttyS4 and be done with it, or do I have to recompile the kernel to ad support for multiple serial ports?
(I would just try it but I have to deal with a kernel panic.....)
Note that the stock kernels do not support serial ports numbered greater than four (/dev/ttyS3). You'll have to either use the available ports, or else build a custom kernel (see Replacing the Rescue Floppy Kernel, Section 10.3).
... and my modem works on COM 5 IRQ 5 (ttyS4). There is an option in Xconfig to allow more serial ports.
This thread is already old and I'm hoping Xreagan or anyone can reply to my inquiry?
Did you manage to use all /dev/ttyS*?
RHEL is running in my box and it has build-in serial port (/dev/ttyS0). It works fine.I add more serial ports (PCI-Serial) and rhel detected it as /dev/ttyS1-S3. My problem is when I'm about to use this 3 the status of minicom is "offline". I also tried using kermit and its the same.
Do I need to do something first. Cables are ok. Devices connected to are also ok.

1 - please to not hijack someone else's thread. Create your own thread, in one location only, and present your issue there.
2 - unless you have some incredibly helpful information to add to an (8 year) old thread, it is good practice to create a new one instead.
