i didn't find a distribution that satisfies my needs
i don't know y???
i need a fast, stable, have a good support many programs and secure system
all sites say that any unix like system have all that
but which one is the distribution to stick with
each time i hear about a powerful system i go to it and give it a try but at the end i found that i don't feel it and see it is not good for me
i tried much distributions and went to bsd but the same happens
i am thinking now about trying ubuntu and debian
but i don't know
i am very dispersed
i want to know how to like unix like and how to feel them????
and which one will be more suitable for me

note:
1-i am an enginner i use my pc for my engineering work(matlab,VHDL,...)
2-i am not fan about games and music
3- i like learning new things
4-my pc is not very new it is P3

If you're making your decision on how it feels for you, then you're the only one who can decide. Just keep trying distributions until you find one you like.

For us to help, you'll need to provide more information. All of the distros I've used were fast, had good support (forums, etc.) and were secure (I'm speaking generally since security is a process rather than a state). Can you tell us what wasn't fast, supported or secure based on what you were doing?

You're asking a question that is insulting to all of us, and that has no correct answer. If one distribution was the best we'd all be using it, right? If anyone tells you that he has the answer to your query, he is simply announcing that all users of other distros are uninformed dummies. Since you're trying different systems, and you haven't tried Debian (based) yet, go ahead and give it a shot. That's where I stopped, but there's no guarantee it'll be satisfactory for you.

The reason for the large number of disks for Debian is because they contain the total system (base plus repositories), there are actually 21 CDs or so. You would be better off to get the DVD set, or at least the first one of the 3. That contains the base system and most of the most popular packages.

Debian will install itself from on-line source also, so it might be easier to get just the first 2 or 3 CDs (I'm not sure how many it would take, I use the DVD), then install on-line--which will take a lot of time.

Since you already have Slack and PC-BSD, you obviously know your way around a computer, and Debian should be great for you.

really i downloaded the cd that is installed form the net
i was schocked when i see that Debian doesn't contain KDE
but it's ok
it looks good
it took 3hours from me to be installed
but i found at the end of the installation that there are alot of programs missing like firefox, kopete,..........
i will download them and install them later
but it was supposed that the cd downloads them too
now i don't know shall i look for ubuntu and download it or what shall i do now?

Firefox has been replaced on Debian by IceWeasel ... same program different name.

There are several ways to install Debian with KDE instead of Gnome, or along side Gnome ... or whatever. Debian has it's own way of doing things ... Here's my HowTo for getting it installed correctly.

Use Ubuntu and after you are done with it go for fedora.Suse is also great but mandriva might be nicer. After all slack rules tham all anyway.

@rickh:Just read the howto in the link.Nice job. Those guys on the debian forum are borderline psychotic though.

And Slackware is absolutely stunning.
Ubuntu does look better than Debian, but looks aren't everything (I say that to myself every time I look in a mirror).

ahmed;

I have the impression you are starting to make yourself crazy over this. The questions you are asking are mostly ones you can answer for yourself---just by trying different distros.

What I did was to set up a bunch of partitions and install ~ 8 different distros. When I get a few minutes, I reboot into one of them and poke around. For a more extreme example, look up Saikee (member here at LQ)

Try Arch or Slackware
