Ok, I somewhat agree with you on the time thing, if you dont have any time, it would be easier to just use a do-it-for you distro, thats fine. I dont really have a problem with SuSE, I would feel comfortable recommending it to anyone, BUT, the point of the thread was BUYING 9.1 after people have already bought 9.0. Every rpm that will be on 9.1 will be availible for download, so in my opinion, if you already bought 9.0, just update it. And by all means, if it makes you feel better, give money to whichever distro you like. Id like to put my money towards something productive, like nicotine, or a new geforce 6800 ultra...

mepis is $10 for each download distro, i can support prices like this, no problem. now with suse- $90 twice a year-not sure-though i do like suse. consolation is that novell is sending me a magazine now, buts it more business oriented.

My point with the freeloader crack was mostly sarcasm. I hear people talking people out of paying for their distros all the time, and it bugs me. We all want Linux to succeed and develop further, yet so many are unwilling to do their part. I cannot (at this point) help develop the kernel, or improve KDE etc, because I lack the skills as a programmer. As such, what I can do is spend my money where it counts, with the organizations I feel are advancing the cause.

I love the availability of free downloads of distributions, as it is the finest way to find the distro that suits your needs. I have downloaded virtually every distro on the planet (well not every distro) and once I settled on the one's I liked, I bought them. It is the only way these companies can survive, is if someone buys their product.

I didn't mean to sound like an ass calling people freeloaders, I was simply trying to make a point.

nice to see 9.1 upgrade , wish it was like $39 , not $59. going to get it, didn,t get suse 9, have all my computers set up running serial raid 0, but on my linux rig, had to dismantle the serial raid -0 and run a single idie drive.

I put it on pre-order. My reasoning was simple. I finished college about three weeks ago, and swore to myself last quarter that after school got out, I was going to reformat every machine in my house to remove all Windows installations and the associated software. My school pushed MS office down our throats as the only software for databases, word processing, etc.

So school is now over, my hard drives are clean, and waiting for me to configure the finest SuSE systems known to man. I have my server running SuSE Standard Server 8, (which rules btw), and my desktop (below) and laptop currently running default installs of SuSE 9 pro. Before I start on my mission to create the perfect Linux systems, I want to have the right foundation. SuSE 9.1 seems to be the perfect starting point. Not only does it contain the latest KDE and Gnome packages, but a 2.6 kernel that will be able to support 95% of my hardware with little modification.

Does not SuSE 9.0 contain the 2.6 kernel as an option? A friend told me it was an option in the version he bought.

SuSE 9.0 contains an old 2.6 kernel upgrade on the CD. I understand that it was still in development when it was put on the CD. Until 2.6.4, I have seen a lot of discussions concerning stability issues and hardware support issues (particularly alsa problems.)

You can also find the upgrade on the SuSE web site under people/kraxel.

I, for one, have been unwilling to upgrade the kernel. As a newbie to Linux (only a few months) I fear trashing the system, which is presently stable. I did, however, upgrade into KDE 3.2.1 which is very nice.
