My Only Gripe with Joli OS - is there a rework of joli
Hey guys
Ok basically i respect what joli have tried to do, its amazing for social networking, netbooks, and your phone, for those devices, joli OS is simply amazing and something rarely seen before
But there desktop release really feels no different. its an old kernel, you cant use new software since ubuntu's 12.04 update ( you cant update the kernel ) etc
Well ok maybe you can do all this under the hood, but it would literally require removing the joli OS desktop package itself
the Version of ubuntu that its based off is simply to old. things have changed, filesystems have changed, kernels have changed
And from what i hear, they dont keep up to date for a year +
Now im not dissing joli OS, i still think the idea is amazing. problem is, the neglect of updates/keeping up to date with ubuntu 12.04, is lacked and missing
So im wondering if theres anything similiar to joli os or a reworked version with the newer kernels etc
Like i said, i understand joli os is for notebooks, older pc's, and phones etc. but they do boast the new desktop edition. but it just isnt up to what a desktop user needs from new software, kernels for hardware, etc etc
If you stick with the major distros then you will get good support and regular updates. Since you seem to like Ubuntu 12.04 that is my recommendation for you. Ubuntu has a ton of users and 12.04 will be supported through April 2017! You might also like Mint (based on Ubuntu plus a few enhancements).
I would like to point out that the small team of developers at Jolicloud made Joli OS open-source back in October of last year. That was at the time they announced their new Jolicloud product which eventually was released as Jolicloud Me for the desktop, iOS & Android. Anyway, you can check out the link below for more info on how to carry on the torch if you feel it needs to be modernized...
However, I will say this. People who think it needs a newer kernel just to install the latest apps doesn't seem to get the point of Joli OS. It's mainly a web app OS. You don't need a newer kernel to take advantage of the latest web apps out there & you're certainly not suppose to run a lot of native apps either. They do however continue updating Chromium & Flash and frankly that's all that's necessary. Now I do wished they would update their HTML5 desktop interface just a tad. There's so much they can do with just HTML5 to make it a newer/better experience. Now if you would have said they need a newer kernel to support the latest hardware, then I might agree with you. However, it's working fine on my Toshiba laptop. So no complaints there.
BTW, from what I was able to gather it looks like that now that the Jolicloud Me beta is wrapping up, they are looking at doing something new with Jolicloud Desktop and Joli OS. Not sure yet, but I'm hopeful it's more than just a kernel upgrade.
