Could be something simple like KMix.
Open the speaker icon in the taskbar.
Make sure all the lights are lit up and the volumes are not at the very
bottom (which means they are off). Set the volumes somewhere in the middle.
Also try mepislovers.org forums.
This distro deserves to be #1 for a reason.
The forums pretty well answer any question.
If you can't get an answer in the advanced search while checking forums (that's what I recommend) then ask a question in the howto section, and the mods usually reply quickly. Sometimes a solution is posted in about 5 minutes. Even pay for distros don't have this kind of support. Which is why Mepis is #3 this month and climbing!!!
I second the suggestion to check KMix. After you first install Mepis, KMix automatically opens, so you can turn sound on and set volume levels. I neglected to turn on everything, and so some of my sounds didn't work, until I went back and activated them.
