Maybe someone can help me with this one. I just recently installed Mandrake 9.1 to a 20GB harddrive on my machine (AMD Athlon XP 2700+, 512MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9100, Sound Blaster Audigy). I have it Dual Booting with Windows 2000 on a separate HD. Lilo is the bootloader.
I have Mandrake set up to run KDE as a GUI and everything works perfect until I have to shut down or restart. When I do restart, it gets as far as shutting off my monitor, then stops and does nothing until I am forced to press the reset button. This behavior is the same with Shut Down. When I press the reset button and reboot Linux by force, it tells me that there was an improper shutdown. Is there anyone who knows what's causing this issue and how I can resolve it? I've waited as long as 1 minute, but I've never seen any other Linux distro take more than 30 seconds to shut down.
Thanx for the info! It worked extremely well..... it's odd though that the menu options wouldn't be implemented the same way as the actual commands. I also found that typing "reboot" serves just as well as the halt command. I appreciate your time. One more question: is there anyway to go in and edit the script/association that those menu commands follow. I know it really doesn't matter if I shut it down from the console or the menu, but I like to have everything functional if you know what I mean. Again thanx for your time.
yes i now what you mean why have it if it wont work.
dont know how toedit the file association pehaps others can help. thanks for reboot tip works a treat handy.
Regards jeff
when you rightclick on the k menu it has something called menu drake... but im not sure if that would work... also a fancy way to turn off comp/reboot is... root konsole or in a regular shell type
su
[password] (in root konsole you dont have to do this cuz your already super user)
#this halts it [runlevel 0]
init 0
#this reboots [runlevel 6]
init 6
just a cool way.... and i guess halt and reboot are the same thing except without the root permission.. there must be a difference and i suppose thats what wrong... maybe thers something still running in the background that doesnt close? like in blackbox after you exit you still have to exit the display you opened [ if you run from failsafe]
i tried and the menu drake doesnt work.. it only letes you edit the other part of the K menu cuz its divided into different sections i guess.. but you can always make an execute command and write like.. "read shutdown" or something where the programs are .. but i wonder whats wrong with your K menu.. have you tried on a different account? maybe a menu file got corrupted? ... i mean just one wrong byte and it might say hal¤ instead of halt [you know what i mean..]
i know for blackbox that the menu is fully editable including the exit and everything though... it might be the same thing in KDe if you edit the text file.. because all menudrake is is a fancy GUI editor to the text file.. [i think...] with a bunch of pixmaps to make it more complicated though .. try going to enable hidden files.. then user/.kde or something and looking for the menu file and checking it out... im not on LINUX atm so i cant check how mine is... :-/
I think the issue you have is with the Display manager, if your using the mdkKDM (Mandrake Display Manager) this may be your problem, I had a similar problem.
To fix it go into Mandrake control center and click on "Hardware" then select "Display Manager Chooser" when it comes up mdkKDM is selected select another one, I use KDM (KDE Display Manager) I have used GDM it also works fine. I think this will fix your problem.
Thanks Brew1Brew. GDE is the only one that seems to work properly but that definitely fixed it. Thanks for the info and thanks to everyone else for the attempts. This is what I love about Linux. You have a problem and people help you. Rad.
