Heads Mandrake,
Tails Fedora?

They are both really nice. FC2 is more recent and the default Gnome desktop is nice I thought. I'm still using Mdk10CE

Well if you have enough space on your drive install FC additionaly to Mandrake. Then you can make your own experience with both systems and decide then.
It may happen that you end up keeping them both, just as happen with me :-).
Mandrake has some really nice features. FC however has it's own advantages, plus FC uses x.org instead of xfree86 X-windows system.
Since there are rumours that also Mandrake and SuSE (SuSE is my primary Linux System) will switch to x.org it's a nice opportunity
to get first experience with it. From the hardware support point of view: I have had less trouble with FC then with Mandrake.
I mean everything works with both of them but I have had to put more effeort to make my Hardware work with Mandrake.
FC has some really nice features which are, for whatever reasons, disabled. So of you want to use, e.g. NTFS or Firewire, you
need to recompile the kernel.

I have properly set up my system and here r my first impressions :

(1) My dial up internet connection goes way faster!

(2)I had many problems with native linux games such as ut2004 ( corrupted screen during the middle of the game etc) which now i don't!

(3)Looks and feels quite more "professional" than mandrake 10.0 ce

(4)Much newer version of programs!

Go slack! It's so straightfoward and perfectly intuitive you will be in love once you start exploring after the install. Not to mention the options, many WMs included for your tinkering. A beefy PC isn't required for a great experience but you can always put one to the test with Gnome or KDE.

As for Fedora vs Mandrake ... consider your likes as well as the companies. Mandrakesoft has more heart IMO, but my first distro was Red Hat and I loved and hated it.

I had a great time with FC1 and if I had wlan support I may even be using FC2.

What do you like / dislike about Mandrake?

I don't have any experience with Mandrake 10, but I thought 9.2's installer didn't have any great detail in what you could install. For example, you couldn't pick and choose specific packages, just things like "home workstation" or "fileserver". I suppose those generic package configurations are great for some, but...

I almost installed FC2, but never got around to doing it. I trashed the idea and went with SuSE. SuSE's just OK. Nothing special, but the complete network install, plus a great online update made it the best choice for my network. On a personal level, I've always liked what RedHat's put out. Since you're only getting FC2 for free now and not RH, I'd only give FC2 the vote because it's in the RedHat camp of products. If you don't like beta stuff, I'd wait for the first FC final.

I've heard mixed ramblings about the 2.6 kernel (which FC2 uses). I don't mind what I've read, but it wasn't working well with ivtv and the MythTV project. This was a deal killer for my PVR box that I just built, so it was SuSE for me at home and at work. I may try FC2 on my laptop though. Mandrake is a little TOO basic for me...
