I use Knoppix on my dad's laptop sometimes (since it runs XP ), and I can't get it to boot unless I use fb1024x768 at the boot prompt, which selects the framebuffer video driver. But this can't be the only one that would work...it has a Trident video card. (fbdev has no acceleration, and I think the "real" one would (the tdfx_dri.so).)
